Let’s talk about me now

September 2, 2020

So, dear non-readers, what am I going to do with my new found time other than obsess about our country going to the dogs? Dogs could probably run it better. My Ralphie certainly keeps our household going along on his timetable.

I’ll do what I always do when I don’t know what to do – I’ll make a list.

YOGA. No longer can I say I don’t have time or I’m too tired. I did pull out my mat and attempted to follow a few recorded sessions, but quickly discovered that I can no longer do many of the poses that I could do 10 years ago, nor could I go the full 50 minutes. I shouldn’t be surprised, but it was discouraging. (Getting old sucks. Don’t let it happen to you.) This is something I’ll just have to work through. Baby steps, as they say.

GARDENING. My backyard is a jungle which is what happens if you live in Florida and you let nature take it course. It’s going to take a lot of work to bring it under control. I’m picturing a curated jungle with paths, exotic blooms, and hidden benches, but here’s the rub: It’s Florida! It’s hot and muggy at 7:00am and at 7:00pm. Not to mention the disease ridden mosquitoes, so I’m putting that task off until October or November.

ACTIVISM. A dear friend of mine volunteers with her local and state political groups and I thought that would be a good use of my time considering the importance of the upcoming election. I recently joined the League of Women Voters, a group I’ve long admired, and seeking out a group of like-minded people would help lift the cloud of dread that the last 4 years have produced, but again there’s a roadblock – the pandemic. Zoom meetings with strangers does not appeal. I’ve been pretty much in lock-down since March and until I can go out without a mask or social distancing I intend to stay home as much as possible. My husband, Joe, and I just took a training on phone banking so we’ll do that but the rest is a wait and see.

CHURCH. No, thanks. I pray alone.

READING. Well, that’s a given. I was a librarian, after all. (Typing WAS and not AM just now made me a little sad.) Now I can read the books on my infinite reading list.

WRITING. That’s what this blog is all about. I’ve kept a journal off and on my whole life so this blog will be sort of like Julia Cameron’s morning pages but with spell check. It’s been a bumpy start. You know when you get in a zone and you lose all track of time? That means you’re probably doing something you love. That happens when I start writing. It’s 3:00 pm and I haven’t had lunch yet so see what I mean?

HOME IMPROVEMENT. Now that I have access to a retirement account, I plan to spend much of it on this house. We need many upgrades like a new roof and a more efficient AC system but how not sexy is that? You don’t invite friends over to look at your new AC condenser, no matter how much it costs. So the first thing I did when I got hold of that money was put in new wood floors downstairs and a big new rug. That’s something I can show off if we’re ever able to entertain again. And I got a quote for a new roof yesterday. Aggg….

Newly retired and wondering what's next. Musing, rambling, ranting and laughing at myself.
